This weeks blog post is all about belts and gradings
We all know that there are different coloured belts in martial arts, but did you know that the order of colours depends on what organisation a club is with; the style/ styles the club teaches and also the personal preference of the club.
For Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club, there are 11 different colours to obtain before reaching your black belt. The reason we have this many belts is because we have so much to teach our students by taking key sections of different styles and blending them together to form a divergent defence system.
Something else you may not know. . .
Did you know that the colours of the belts have meanings? check out the chart below where you can view the different belt colours and the meaning they have behind them in Korean:
The meaning behind each belt colour marks your progression towards black belt and beyond as you continue your never ending martial arts journey. While you still practice their is always something new to learn, and it's not all about learning new things, it is also about perfecting your technique in what you already know to become an accomplished martial artist.
You can also have a look at the Japanese meaning to belt colours by following > THIS < link.
News about gradings
All of our students are making great progress, some of our newer students will soon be going for their yellow belts, whilst our current yellow belts are showing great enthusiasm and determination in learning what they need to know for their orange belts. However our students aren't the only ones going forward for their next gradings, our instructors are too!
Our secondary instructor Emma Hore will be going for her 2nd Dan grade in April, whilst our head instructor Jamie Hubbard is going for his 4th Dan grade later in the year.
This has been a very exciting year so far for Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club; with the growing number of enthusiastic students and approaching gradings, we can't wait to see what the rest of the year holds. Make sure you check back soon to see what other updates we have for you.
A Few updates to Hiryu Budou-Jyo
There is also an update to our time for our class!
Whilst we still start at 7pm, we now finish at 8:30pm; adding on another half an hour to our lesson where we can add a little more to your fitness training without compromising your practical training!
A Study group for swordsmanship
As an additional class, our head instructor Jamie Hubbard is beginning a study group alongside a fellow swordsman at Trewoon Village hall on a Sunday morning to study the Iaido style of Hasegawa Eishin- Ryū alongside the traditional sword art of Kendo (Please click on the names to find out more). While this is a study group, we encourage others who wish to learn sword work to come along and join in, we are more than happy to help you learn!
Trewoon Village hall is also close to St Austell town to maintain a reasonable travel distance for our students who wish to join us. You don't have to be one of our regular students to join our study group, so feel free to get in contact no matter who you are!
If you would like more information on joining this study group, please don't hesitate to get in contact with our head instructor Jamie on: 07756532873.
That's all for this weeks announcements, please check back again soon to see what other news Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club has for you!
A Dedication To Our Students
Our blog post this week is dedicated to our students who have joined us over the past few months. Without our students we wouldn't be a club, and we feel honoured and privileged to have a group of hard working; dedicated and enthusiastic students to pass our knowledge on to.
On January 10th, our first five students went forward for their first grading and we are pleased to say they all passed with flying colours! In a training session now, our students practice all that they learnt for their first grading to keep it fresh in their mind and improve their technique before moving on to something new towards their next grading.
The students receiving their yellow belts and certificates at their graduation
Since the students received their yellow belts we have had 3 more students join our group, each as enthusiastic to learn something new as the rest of our group.
We always aim to help our students learn something in a fun and exciting way so what they learn sticks with them, and all of our students take this on board and thrive in our class as well as out of it where they choose to train together in their own time.
Once more we would like to say a big thank you to all of our students and well done for how far you have already come. You are all an honour to work with and we are proud to be your instructors. Keep up the good work!
Welcome back to Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club's blog!
This week's post explores the art of Jujutsu
At Hiryu Budou-Jyo, we blend the art of Jujutsu with techniques derived from other arts to allow for a smooth flowing technique that can defeat any opponent. We ensure that all techniques are blended and adapted to allow them to suit all situations, for example if you were to punch your opponent, you could not guarantee if they would fall or not; and if they did, which way they would fall. For this reason we teach all of our students to defend against all of these possibilities using a variety of techniques, including Jujutsu, to allow them to overcome obstacles they may encounter when facing their opponent.
You can view examples of our head instructor Jamie Hubbard training in the art of Jujutsu by clicking >>THIS LINK<< to be taken through to our Facebook page. Here you can view traditional techniques being demonstrated by Jamie Hubbard alongside fellow student Chris Bell, taught by Sensei Dave Remnant.
We hope you found this week's blog post interesting and informative, please feel free to give us a call on 07756532873 or 07711789634 if you would like to know more about our blended style of martial arts.
This weeks training session was focussed on perfecting our technique
On the left, you can see our head instructor Jamie Hubbard performing a Jumping Sidekick, whilst on the right he is performing a High-Section Sidekick. The foot shape and body position in these two kicks are especially important for maintaining balance and regaining composure again after the kick, returning to your guarding stance to prepare for any further attacks.
Below you can click a link to our Facebook page where you can watch one of our more advanced patterns being performed by Mr Hubbard using a > Bo Staff<. This is a pattern that all our students will have the opportunity to learn, and is a great example of perfecting technique. When teaching this, the pattern is broken down into sections and performed slowly to show our students all of the correct hand positions and movements to allow the pattern to flow smoothly. We hope you enjoy the video, feel free to leave a comment on what you think of this weeks blog.

Welcome To Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club!
This is the first of many blog posts from Hiryu Budou-Jyo, which will allow us to keep in better contact with our students as well as keeping you updated on what happens at the club. To get the full experience of what we have to offer, you will have to come along to our Sunday session from 6pm - 8pm; where you will be able to attend a FREE taster session where we will show you a little bit of each martial art we have to offer as well as how we blend these styles together to create one divergent self defense system.
This week we have had two new students come and find out what we have to offer, with both students being shown an extensive range of what we do with one-to-one tuition for their first session. Both of our students expressed an interest in coming back, and both put forward the idea of having a second session a week as they wanted to be able to do more with us! If you feel a second session would be beneficial to our students then please leave us a comment by clicking on the word "comment" at the top of this blog post and let us know what you think!
We greatly appreciate any feedback, not only about our blog but also our teaching, so please call 07756532873 or 07711789634 to book your free taster session and get the full experience of Flying Dragon Martial Arts Club!
